Front Cover:  The beginning of this year’s Paschal Vigil, April 7th, 2012—Deacon Blazek holds the Easter Candle as Fr. Higgins traces the inscription and places the five grains of incense to mark the glorified wounds of Christ.  The words of the inscription are:  “Christ yesterday and today, the Beginning and the End, Alpha and Omega.  His are the times and ages.  To Him be glory and dominion through all ages of eternity.  Amen.  May the light of Christ in glory rising again dispel the darkness of heart and mind.”  Photo by Paul Eldridge.

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Bulletin for March 4, 2012

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Bulletin for the week of March 4, 2012

Bulletin: MaryImmaculate-2012-03-04.pdf

Front Cover: “Mass in a Connemara Cabin,” by Aloysius O’Kelly, A.D. 1883.  This painting conveys the simplicity and tenacity of the Catholic faith in Ireland.  The west of Ireland suffered most heavily from the Great Famine of 1845-1847 and the “Land War” in the latter decades of the 1800s.  This particular painting had been considered lost since 1895 and was only re-discovered a few years ago in a rectory in Edinburgh, Scotland.  The painting is part of an exhibit on Rural Ireland now on display at the McMullen Art Museum, Boston College.

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Bulletin for February 26, 2012

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Bulletin for the week of February 26, 2012

Bulletin: MaryImmaculate-2012-02-26.pdf

Front Cover: “Healing at the Pool of Bethesda”, by the Danish painter, Carl Bloch, A.D. 1883.  This depicts the Scriptural scene of Christ healing a man who had been in a state of paralysis for 38 years, and was lying helplessly by the pool which had the power to heal him.  Christ heals him by His word of command.  This is the Gospel lesson from Ember Friday in Lent, John 5:1-15, in the Tridentine Roman Missal.  In 1858, during the apparitions to Bernadette at Lourdes, Ember Friday fell on February 26th.  This was the day on which the Lourdes spring—which Our Lady had revealed to Bernadette the day before—began gushing forth water, also with its power to relieve the sick.

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Bulletin for February 12, 2012

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Bulletin for the week of February 12, 2012

Bulletin: MaryImmaculate-2012-02-12.pdf

Front Cover: An illustration of the Apparition of Our Lady to St. Bernadette Soubirous within the grotto of the massive rock, known by the people of Lourdes as the “Massabielle”, along the bank of the River Gave.  Bernadette’s first apparition was on February 11th, 1858.  She was to receive 17 more.  The last one occurred on July 16th, 1858.  Although the picture shows Our Lady as if visible to all, Bernadette alone saw her.  The onlookers saw only Bernadette in her ecstasy.

Pastor’s Note: Lourdes, 1858
